"To establish, between men and women from all countries, links through nautical activities"... This objective, as mentioned in the Glénans’ statutes, conveys the humanism and open-mindedness of their founders, more than 60 years ago. Not only does one learn sailing at the Glénans, but also solidarity and life in a community. The atmosphere and the quality of training are very often stated as the 2 top qualities of the school. When the association was created in 1947, at the famous " Glénan Archipelago " in Brittany, sailing was still in its infancy. The Glénans were pioneers in the teaching of sailing. The first sailing instructors learned their duty with local fishermen. Step by step they developed an expertise, with a good combination of theoretical and practical skills, and with a constant preoccupation for safety and the objective of reaching a good degree of autonomy. The Glénans also conceived some sailing equipment and initiated countless innovations and design of numerous sailings boats. One of these first boats, the famous " Vaurien " dinghy, met with great success. As early as 1961, the Glénans decided to synthesize their knowledge in what was to become the " Bible " of sailing, the "Cours des Glénans", a collective work whose 6th edition was published in 2002. To date, nearly 350,000 trainees and instructors, from all countries, have been trained with the Glénans, a school considered by many as the “THE reference”.
